Sport at Chailey

As a school we regularly compete in fixtures as part of the North Wealden cluster of secondary schools. This means we have regular matches in all major sports against Uckfield, Uplands, Priory, Beacon and Heathfield. Many of these competitions allow winners to progress further to compete at the "Schools Games". We also enter into Sussex Schools Cross-Country and Athletic events and have recently entered some of our teams into the County Cup for football. Our ethos is based around inclusion so we will try to ensure that all students that do want to participate in competitive sport get the opportunity to do so, either through our school fixtures or via our interhouse sports programme.

Under 13's Sussex Schools Runners Up

Last Friday the Year 8 footballers competed in the Sussex Schools FA U13 Shield Final. This was the first SSFA Final we have qualified for in many years and we had the privilege of playing this fixture at the Sussex FAs HQ at Culver Road. The boys were very motivated and ready for the game and worked hard from the first whistle. With the score 0-0 after a very even first half, we pushed into the second half with fight. Unfortunately, in the latter stages of the second half, we conceded a penalty which completely changed the game. The boys fought until the end with passion but it wasn’t to be with the final score at 2-0 to Oriel. We’d like to thank all the parents, siblings, students and staff members for coming along to support. It meant the world to the boys and to the PE Department.

Ouse Valley 2026

Chailey School Shine at Ouse Valley District Athletics

On Tuesday 16th June, Chailey School proudly competed in the Ouse Valley District Athletics event, with an impressive 58 students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 taking part.

The day was marked by sunny and hot weather, creating challenging conditions for competitors, particularly in the longer distance events. Despite this, Chailey students rose to the occasion, showing resilience, determination and outstanding team spirit throughout.

All students represented Chailey School exceptionally well, competing with enthusiasm and supporting one another in every event. Their conduct, both in competition and on the sidelines, was a true credit to the school.

Standout Performances

There were numerous exceptional individual and team performances across the day:

  • Eron delivered a dominant performance in the 800m, taking 1st place after leading from the start and finishing with a considerable gap over the field.
  • Tigan showed incredible resilience in her race, continuing after an early fall that left her with grazed knees, and still managing to finish an impressive 5th.
  • Will  excelled in the field events, winning 1st place in the Triple Jump (10.73m), before stepping in at the last minute for the Long Jump and securing 2nd place.
  • Cory demonstrated outstanding speed in the 100m, even acknowledging the Chailey supporters mid-race on his way to a rapid finish.
  • Iris  cleared a superb 1.30m to take 1st place in the High Jump.
  • Will  was a dominant force, winning the 200m, Shot Put, and playing a key role in the Year 8 Boys Relay victory—ploughing through the competition with power and control.
  • Charlie and Millie both ran intelligent, well-paced races in the 1500m, each securing 1st place in their events.
  • Theodora, Lilja, Nuala, Edie, Isla, and Flo all delivered strong performances to earn silver medals in their respective events.
  • Chailey also enjoyed outstanding success in the Shot Put, achieving 1st place in nearly every year group.
  • Django had an excellent debut, winning 1st in Long Jump and placing 2nd in the 100m.
  • Iris  also impressed on debut, taking 1st place in Shot Put and 2nd in the 300m.
  • The Year 10 Girls Relay Team produced a superb performance, narrowly missing out on victory against Priory School but earning great admiration for their effort and determination.
  • Toby delivered a fantastic third-leg run in the Year 7 Boys Relay, surging through the field to help the team secure 2nd place.

Overall Performance and Team Spirit

Chailey School finished an excellent 2nd place overall, just behind Lewes Priory, capping off a highly successful day of competition.

Beyond the results, what truly stood out was the students’ exceptional behaviour and sportsmanship. They demonstrated outstanding teamwork, encouragement and empathy, cheering on not only their teammates but also competitors from other schools—particularly those who struggled in their races.

Their resilience, determination to succeed, and willingness to support others made them stand out as one of the most admirable teams at the event.

Conclusion

This was a fantastic day for Chailey School, filled with impressive performances, personal achievements and exemplary conduct. The students should be immensely proud of their efforts—and the school community could not be prouder of them.
