Mid Sussex STEM Challenge – July 4th
A team of Year 8 students participated in the Mid Sussex STEM Challenge, showcasing a drone they designed and built throughout the year with guidance from a STEM ambassador from Balfour Beatty. They competed against 10 other teams from local schools. The challenge involved mastering new skills, including working with electronic components, constructing the drone’s frame, and preparing a presentation to highlight their efforts.
The students delivered an impressive presentation in front of a panel of judges, two local MPs, Mayors, and fellow students. While many drones struggled to take flight, the Chailey drone successfully soared—until it suffered a dramatic crash. Despite the setback, the students had an incredible experience and learnt a lot from the competition.
