Chailey School was awarded Language College Status in July 2002. We want to develop a visible, outward-looking international ethos across the school as we prepare students for citizenship in the increasingly global community of the 21st century. We aim to show the relevance of Modern Foreign Languages to the world of work and raise awareness of our multicultural society.
Many successful events have been organised to promote the international dimension in all curriculum areas since our first International Day was held in July 2003 where John Agard, the well-known poet from Guyana, joined Year 7 students to celebrate the vibrancy of Caribbean culture with a performance of his own poetry followed by poetry workshops. In July each year we organise a cultural enrichment week for Years 7 – 10 with exciting activities and educational visits. There is a strong emphasis on Art, Music, Drama and Dance with professional workshops taking place.
We have been building on our strong links with our feeder primary schools to encourage and support them in the introduction of languages at Key Stage 2.
Students can learn a variety of languages at Chailey, including French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Russian and Spanish and are offered the opportunity to visit different countries. We run after-school language clubs for students and language taster classes for parents, staff and the community.
Chailey has been awarded the International School Award by the British Council in recognition of our excellent practice in developing the international dimension at Chailey.
